Jamaican Ska

April 10th, 2009
Jamaican Ska

Ska originated in the late 1950’s in Jamaica- bringing together R&B and Doo-Wop influences into a distinctly new Jamaican sound.  To get your Reggae Friday started, we have compiled a collection of early Ska tunes- including songs from the Skatalites and the Folkes Brothers,  as well as  rare tracks from the Wailers.    Dig it, it’s Friday!

Ska Science

Ska originated in Jamaica with artists like Prince Buster and the Skatalites, influencing the chug-chug sound that eventually became reggae music. But Ska didn’t stop there, continuing to inspire the early UK punk/new wave scene–listen to the Specials, the Clash, and Mr. Costello–as well as an American generation of punk/pop bands from Rancid to No Doubt.
