Treading the line between genuine musicality and tongue-in-cheek farce, Eurodance (or Eurotrash as it’s known to some) is every raver’s little guilty pleasure. Look past the hair gel, the fist pumps, and the neon-colored sunglasses and every once in a while you’ll find a gem worth jamming to. Sometimes it’s not about the art, it’s about the party: “and she said…!”

English Drum and Bass

June 18th, 2009
English Drum and Bass

Drum and Bass (DNB), an electronic form of music, is a tribal music with a similarly tribal following. It is a genre whose spectrum of sound is immense, varying from atmospheric to soulful to heavy and pounding. It is often compared to jazz in the sense that the listener can experience an assortment of diverse sounds all falling under the umbrella of one musical genre. In this sense, the creation of DNB is typified more by an approach than a sound. This playlist samples some of the more soulful Drum n Bass tunes to come out of England in the past few years. So put on those headphones, turn up the volume and wait for the “drop”!

hypomaNic Benny Benassi

The venerable DJ / remixer / producer extraordinaire Benny Benassi has always been a personal favorite of mine. I’ve even gone so far as to list him as my religious views on Facebook (no joke). With this playlist, I prove to you that Benny is much more than “Satisfaction.” From the delicately crafted remix of Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Otherside” to the dystopian chords of “Come Fly Away,” his instantly recognizable chirps are always a delight.

Floss a DUBSTEP

Floss a DUBSTEP

Dubstep is a genre of electronic music that is distinguished by its dark mood, sparse rhythms, and emphasis on bass. It is similar to drum and bass/jungle in its diversity within the genres, pulling from anything and everything musical that it possibly can.  We hope you enjoy these selections, and remember, always let the BASS be your guide…

DJ hypomaNic Session #1

DJ hypomaNic Session #1

A good remix is one that takes a classic song, tears it apart, and makes it something new, while still hearkening back to the roots of that classic. Thus, for my inaugural Hypomanic Monday, I give you Golden Oldies; a collection of remixes and covers of pre-1985 tracks. Some are straight-up remixes, some are almost unrecognizable covers of classic rock songs. Highlights include: Gabriel & Dresden’s cover of Kansas’s Dust in the Wind; Tiger Baby’s heart-wrenching cover of Joy Division’s Love Will Tear Us Apart; and capping it all off comes a cover of Neil Diamond’s classic Sweet Caroline from Angelo Venuto.

Go Gossip Girl

Go Gossip Girl

Whether your favorite character is Dan, Serena or Blair, you can’t deny the appeal of a show based on a bunch of attractive, spoiled, bratty Upper-East Side teens looking for love, sex and trouble in the bars and lounges of Manhattan. The show is a hit and, surprisingly, the music featured is great.
